How I work, and why

The rest of this site says what I have built. This page says how I work, and why.

Teams build the software

I believe true leaders build teams, not software. The teams build the software. My job as a principal engineer or architect is not to be the smartest person in the room, but to make the room smarter: to set a clear direction, make the trade-offs visible, and leave behind people who can make the next decision without me.

Those teams look different now. We build hybrid teams of people and agents that grow together — people shape the agents, and the agents extend what people can do. That is why I care so much about memory. A team, human or machine, is only as good as what it can remember, share and trust. Agents that forget, or that cannot explain where a fact came from, cannot be real teammates.

I am also a pragmatist. We always work with a lack of resources, and that is not going to change. So the most important decision is choosing the right challenge to tackle — the one that moves the most with what we actually have — and building a strategy around it, rather than around the plan we would make if we had everything.

Principles

Do, validate, iterate, learn, teach.

  1. Do

I learn by building. A working prototype on real data settles more questions than a month of diagrams, so I get something running early and let it argue back.

  2. Validate

Decisions are tested against real results and real data, not hypothetical ones. If we cannot measure whether an idea worked, we have not finished deciding.

  3. Iterate

Small, reversible steps, each one informed by the last. Architecture is a sequence of good-enough decisions recorded as ADRs, not a single grand plan.

  4. Learn

Every iteration should leave the team knowing something it did not know before — about the domain, the users, or itself.

  5. Teach

What I learn I hand on: through reviews, workshops, books and pairing. A decision only one person understands is a liability, not an asset.

Extend yourself with people and tools. No one scales alone. I multiply my reach through the people I work with and the tools — and now the agents — I build or choose, and I expect the same of the teams I help.

Outside work

The same habit — learn something properly by teaching it — runs through what I do off the clock. I write children's books in Ukrainian about Max and Tsugi, for kids living with cerebral palsy, because what we teach children is the future we get. And I write about tea, yerba mate and one techno-horror novella, mostly to understand things I already love.
